Data Visualization Questions, Answered

What it is, what data you need, how it goes on your website, how it stays accessible and current, and what it costs. Each answer comes with a short animation where seeing it helps.

GETTING STARTED

From a spreadsheet to something people explore

Every visualization starts as rows and columns. We turn each record into something you can see, sort and compare, without changing a single number.

It is a chart, map or story on a web page that people can explore themselves: filter it, search it, hover for details and follow it over time. The numbers come straight from your data, and every chart has a text version behind it.
If it fits in a spreadsheet, it can be visualized. Most projects start from an export of something you already keep, like a listings file, a budget, survey results or an open data portal download.
No. We clean, check and document the data as part of the project, and we tell you what it can honestly show. We never fill gaps with made-up numbers.
You tell us who needs to understand your data and what you have. We suggest what the experience could look like, and then send a quote.
It depends on the data and the features. We give you a timeline with the quote, and you see a working draft early so you can steer it.

ON YOUR WEBSITE

It lives right on your own site

Each visualization is a single web page. One embed code places it on almost any website, and it can also be shared with a link.

Yes. Each visualization embeds on any website that allows an embed, including WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and most intranets. It can also live on its own page with its own link.
No. It opens in any modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download and no account to create.
Yes. Every build is designed for small screens too, with touch-friendly controls and text that stays readable.
No. The visualization loads in its own frame, separate from the rest of your page, so your own content is not held up while it loads.

KEEPING IT CURRENT

New data in, a fresh visualization out

Data changes. We set each build up so new data can be checked and added, and the visualization refreshes without being rebuilt.

Yes. Every build is set up so new data can be added and the visualization refreshed, whether you update it yourself or have us do it.
Often, yes. When your data is published on a schedule, such as an open data portal or a regular export, we can set the visualization to refresh from it.
Each update goes through the same checks as the first build, so a broken file or a missing column is caught before anyone sees it.

AODA / WCAG 2.1 AA

Built for everyone from the start

Accessibility is not an add-on. Every visualization works with a keyboard, speaks to screen readers and has a text table behind every chart.

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requires public sector organizations, and private and nonprofit organizations with 50 or more employees, to make their public websites meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA.
It is an international standard for accessible web content. Version 2.1 is newer and stricter than the 2.0 that AODA names, with more criteria for phones, low vision and cognitive needs. Every visualization we build meets WCAG 2.1 AA.
Every control works from the keyboard, changes are announced to screen readers, colours meet contrast rules, and every chart has a text table so no number depends on seeing the picture. See how we meet WCAG 2.1 AA.
Every moving element has a pause button, stops when it scrolls off screen, and shows a still picture to anyone who has asked their device to reduce motion.

DATA AND PRIVACY

Real data, handled with care

We only show real numbers from named sources. When data is about people, we group it so no one can be identified.

No. Every figure comes from your data or a named public source. When something is modelled rather than measured, like lake currents, it is labelled as modelled.
Mostly from Statistics Canada, provinces, municipalities and agencies like Environment and Climate Change Canada, under open licences. We credit the source on every visualization.
We work with grouped, de-identified data. Small counts are combined or left out so no person, member or farm can be picked out, and nothing is published without your sign-off.
You do. Your data stays yours, and how the finished visualization is owned or licensed is agreed in the quote, before any work starts.

PRICING

Quoted for your project, never one size fits all

Every project is different, so every project is quoted. The size of the data and the features you want are what move the price.

Every project is quoted after a discovery call. The price depends on the size and condition of the data, the number of views, and features like maps, guided tours or downloadable reports. See what affects pricing.
Yes. You can use one of our ready-made visualizations with your own data and branding on a monthly or yearly plan, or start with a custom build and licence it after.
Yes. Our report tools let staff or visitors download a branded PDF or PowerPoint of the exact view they are looking at. See Report Studio.
Yes. We build white-label visualizations for marketing and web agencies to offer their own clients. See how we work with agencies.

Still have a question?

Book a discovery call and ask us anything about your data. We will show you what an interactive experience could look like and what it takes to build it.
